ENCOUNTERS
House of Lucie Athens proudly presents the group photography exhibition “Encounters”. The exhibition is curated by the artists.
Participating photographers:
Yannis Karpouzis
Gogo Ponirakou
Alexandra Riba
Vangelis Tatsis
The exhibition “Encounters” presents the dispersion of contemporary trends in Greek photography through the dialogue between the works of Yannis Karpouzis, Gogo Ponirakou, Alexandra Riba, and Vangelis Tatsis. The co-curation and co-organisation of the exhibition by the four participants allows each work to be presented separately and in its entirety, while also highlighting the active dialogue within the field of artistic photography in Greece. A dialogue that, while perhaps more lively and fruitful than ever, appears to be extremely limited at the institutional level (major museums, central galleries, magazines, etc.).
The exhibition is a hybrid between a collective exhibition and four individual ones. This relationship allows for the clear presentation of each photographer’s language, its themes of interest, and its political-philosophical concerns, as well as to bring into contrast four different expressions of contemporary photography, presenting the pluralism that characterizes the contemporary visual use of the photographic medium.
With a keen interest in inclusivity, the team consists of two women and two men of different ages, backgrounds, and diverse artistic approaches. The works span black-and-white and colour photography, across a range of formats and visual languages, from documentary – style practices to vernacular, from high-definition clarity to deliberately grainy aesthetics. The common ground between the four is their social concern for the world today and the various ways in which the most realistic medium, photography, can speak about it.
